GILROY, Santa Clara County — November 5, 2026. Gilroy Unified School District voters gave an early numerical Yes majority to Measure M, a proposed $295 million school facilities bond, but the preliminary share was below the 55% approval threshold required for adoption. The count reported at 11:10 p.m. November 3 placed Yes at 5,880 votes (51.57%). That is a source-stamped election-night figure, not final rejection or passage.
What the $295 million proposal would finance
The official ballot wording reported by the Gilroy Dispatch calls for updating classrooms, restrooms and school facilities, safety and security improvements, career technical education classrooms and roof repairs. The bond proposal would levy approximately $59 per $100,000 of assessed property value, with estimated annual collections of $18.3 million while bonds remain outstanding. These are official ballot estimates, not taxes already collected or project budgets already spent.
Why 51.57% is not necessarily passage
Many ballot measures are decided by a simple majority, but this school facilities question requires 55% of valid votes. That is why the reported numerical Yes majority remained below the required approval threshold in the early count. Additional legally qualifying ballots can change the proportion, and the county must certify the result before any final status is established.
How voters should read the fiscal terms
Assessed value is not the same as a property’s current sale price. The proposed tax and annual revenue estimates are described in the bond’s ballot text; the eventual financing costs, timing and independent oversight obligations depend on the authorized program and subsequent implementation. The measure states money would be spent locally and not on teacher or administrator salaries, with audits and oversight.
A separate Gilroy tax question
Gilroy voters also considered city Measure B, a lodging tax proposal. California58 has reported the preliminary Measure B Yes majority. The two issues are not comparable without their different jurisdictions, tax bases and approval thresholds: one is a school district bond and the other is a municipal tax question.
Next count and verification
For the newer results and exact measure text, see the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters. The Dispatch story is based on the November 3 11:10 p.m. batch, so its figures may be older than later county tables. California58 is not describing the proposal as officially rejected until county canvassing and certification establish the legal outcome.
