GILROY — November 2, 2026. The City of Gilroy has published a master street-tree plan describing approved tree species, planting distances and design rules intended to reduce conflicts with sidewalks and utilities.
Street trees are different from private-yard trees
The city says homeowners generally have freedom to plant on their own private land outside the public right-of-way. Planting a tree within the city park strip may require an approved species and possibly a city permit.
What the guidelines specify
The city’s planting plan describes a minimum spacing of 30 feet between street trees, root-barrier requirements and restrictions in park strips narrower than 24 inches. Property conditions and exceptions should be confirmed with the city before digging.
Who to ask
The city publishes 408-846-0444 for Community Services questions about the approved street-tree list, and its FAQ directs residents to Public Works at 408-846-0424 about possible city planting in front of a home. Contact the utility before working near overhead or underground lines.
